Animal protection is regulated by provincial laws, as well as the animal cruelty section of Canada’s Criminal Code. Charges can be pressed against anyone not offering expected care, such as food, water or shelter, for an owned animal. A person who harms or kills a wild or domestic animal can be arrested and charged under provincial law, Canada’s Criminal Code or both.
