In Ontario, a child is eligible for junior kindergarten the year they turn four. To be eligible for senior kindergarten, a child must be five years old by the end of December in a given school year.
In Québec, pre-school is called garderie. It is for children less than 5 years old. Maternelle corresponds with senior kindergarten. It is for children aged five and six.
Alberta Education funds the kindergarten program. Children who have reached their fifth birthday within a calendar year are eligible to enroll in kindergarten in September of that year. Most programs are half-day, while full-day kindergarten programs are offered in a few communities. In Calgary, parents can register their children through the admissions office at Kingsland Centre. In Edmonton, parents must register their children at the school within their catchment area.
In British Columbia, full-day kindergarten is available for all five-year-olds. Children who reach their fifth birthday within a calendar year are eligible to enroll in kindergarten in September of that year.
