Vancouver is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The Greater Vancouver area has over 2.4million residents, making it the most populous city in western Canada, and the third most populous city in the country. It is also Canada’s most densely populated municipality and one of its most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities. In fact, more than half of its residents claim a language other than English as their first language. Almost 30 per cent of the city’s residents claim Chinese heritage, while there are substantial numbers of residents with South Asian and Filipino ancestry, among others. The city’s official website is www.vancouver.ca.
Vancouver is an important commercial centre, as its port, now Canada’s largest, forms the gateway to Pacific trade. Nestled between the base of the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the city is a popular tourist destination with striking views and world-class winter and summer sports facilities. The 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics were held in Vancouver and nearby Whistler, a world-famous ski resort. Vancouver has close to 300 city-run parks, beaches and gardens. Major film production studios in Vancouver, Richmond and Burnaby have made Vancouver one of the largest film production centres in North America.
